Punching Bag is about the unseen impact of our texted words, and the emotional consequences of hiding behind a screen. The phone hangs from the ceiling and displays a loop of the me relaxing. When a viewer texts the attached number with something "mean" (as determined via sentiment analysis), my face contorts into pain.
To get a video of genuine pain, I dropped a heavy roll of duct tape on my foot. Many times.
The work is a custom iOS app that simply loops the two videos (pain and non-pain). The text integration is via Twilio, which notifies a server whenever a message arrives. This message is run through sentiment analysis, and if it's sufficiently negative, the phone is notified to trigger the pain loop.
